Hello, All:
I'm at the point now, that I'm scratch building all of the pieces and parts for the interior of my 1/16 Tamiya Tiger II with the "Porsche" turret. Does anybody know what color of the onboard fire extinguisher that mounts on the left side of the fighting compartment bulkhead? All of my reference material pics are in black and white with no verbal reference to color, so maybe somebody out there could answer my question!?!? Thanks in advance.

Re: Fire extinguisher

April 14 2006, 4:46 PM

Hello Wayne,

I know in the 40s fire extinguishers were painted green, not red like today. Actually I don't know if FEs for military vehicles were painted in this way or if they received a coat of camouflage colour in the factory or after installation on the outside. For the interior, I think green may be right after all...

Cheers,
Massimiliano

To my knowledge........

April 14 2006, 5:05 PM

.....the Tetra extinguisher was yellow and has to this date not seen any photos that contradict that.
Hope this helps.

But now when.......

....I read your question again and I see you ask about the interior extinguisher I say there is strong evidence telling us it was red.
Please have a look here at a Tiger I:

Kent:
Thank you so much, that one photo says it all! I couldn't understand how the extinguisher could be yellow, in the black and white pics - it appeared to be too dark to be yellow. RED IT IS - thanks again!

Tiger extinguisher....

It should be noted that the unit in the photo is not one of the common hand-held extinguishers, it is a dedicated fixed unit for the Tiger's engine.

Also, this is a restored vehicle. Some parts were discarded and replaced by new ones. I don't know if this is an original extinguisher.

But this one in the 'Saumur' Tiger is much more likely to be real:

Has been discussed before....

Wayne,

before drawing any conclusions based on photographs of restored vehicles, try to find an old thread here on ML - this has been discussed in detail like 6 months ago.
Here is an even older thread that might be useful:

There are pictures of original units on the net, just google around a bit and you should be able to find them. How about this one:

What you see on a lot of restored vehicles today a modern extinguishers, which are all red. Those in/on Wehrmacht vehicles were typically not!

Best regards,

Stefan

The green 1/6th one is incorrect and is more a US item with German markings.
The Tetra one used on German avf:s looked like this.
