Gentlemen; just a question . What is the colour of an externally mounted fire extinguisher on a panzergrey german vehicle .I have just finished a Sturer Emil and was wondering if Red is appropriate as it is mounted on the fender, or should I just stick to the hull colour. Common sense would lead one to think that this should stand out for easy recognition ,like on allied armour, or on those mounted in the interior of the vehicle. ( I just realize that I have become a Tread Head!!! ).

The ultimate pics on fire extinguisher !!!
November 13 2006, 2:37 PM
Early fire extinguisher were grey or light grey.
Most of late FE are sand.
FE handles can be cast or with welded construction.
Untouched FE on their rack still have security wire with lead "seals".
Early rack has 2 straps. Very late racks have only 1 strap. I have pic of one FE in a friend's collection. I also saw some 5 pieces of late dug-out racks that were with one strap only.
Friend's FE:

This FE has small pressed steel label.
One of my FE:

This FE has small stamped black label.
Red FE have non-foldable handle and I was told it was for bunker, etc...

About the labels, here are other self speaking pics :

Small label on the side ( unfortunatly scratched on beautiful friend's FE )

Just hoping not to see red FE on panzer and SdKfz... Those pics will stay for a long time in ML !
Previous posts list given below don't give my early posts about FE...
I just bought those 1:35 FE labels set on Ebay: item number : 220046861752
I can't say how accurate they are but due to the size it will be good enough !

Now, THIS is really one of the most useful threads....
November 14 2006, 10:28 AM
I have never been convinced from the red extinguisher so often depicted, for more than a reason e.g. they are crazy idea in regards of camouflaging (we have subdued arm patches on uniforms to avoid bright colours and we should strap a BRIGHT RED half meter long can on the back of a three colour camoed tank? ...hmmm... don't think so..) and also because the red standard, as already said, is a modern standard (and still the british had different colours like blue or black for different kind of extinguisher in late 80s IIRC..)....
But only shots I could rely until today were the PzKpfw IV extinguisher pics from Munster museum and just a couple more pics here and there..., so...
THANK YOU!
THIS thread should be evidenced... together with another thread showing that NoTek rear column light (the four squares) aren't red like a modern Toyota stop light, but blue/green...

Small correction
November 14 2006, 2:31 PM
The red colour for fire ext. is not a modern standard. It was allready used before and during the war. Just not on military vehicles for the obvious reasons you stated. I do have a picture of a Wehrmacht Mercedes truck with a red fire ext. It comes from the movie Harald refers to in this thread. Mail me if you want to receive it. It was almost for sure a civilian fire ext. that was taken and used on the truck.
Richard
You're very generous taking the time to upload and share them here with everyone, so many thanks mon ami.
It ought to be mentioned for the record this image below actually came from the former moderator Jon Bailey's collection and was kindly posted by him here several years ago:

some were green

There is a colour photo on the cover of Osprey's 6th Panzer Division book which shows an early Panzer IV having a green fire extinguisher mounted on the fender.

for the wonderful information and photoes.
The info should be sufficient concerning colours. The only missing point could be some measures.
Once again thanks to all.
Harald
p.s.
During the discussion I remembered a scene of a film on German TV called The great dictators. Part 1: Hitler (31.10.2006, Channel ZDF). They showed a Mercedes van with clearly visible red fe. But as I had no chance to send the photo, I did not mention it or introduce it into the discussion.
I am very sure that this ext. was a civilian type used in military service.
Have to say i have nothing at all to do with the producer except that i bought afew sets today when i found them... been looking for something like them for a long time.
