How late was the 251/17 C in service?

Really what I would like to know is whether this version, the Luftwaffe version I guess, survived long enough to appear in three tone camouflage? If so, if someone would be kind enough to direct me to some pics, that would be great.

TIA,
Terry

Here's a pic of a 251/17 in Italy, note Waffen-SS camo tunics and Luftwaffe tropical uniforms:

Pic is from Sturm&Drang 251 book, but published n many times in all possible publications.

Are you sure about the location ?

According to Jentz, in 1943 nine of these were sent to Tunisia with the 18th batterie of Flakregiment HG. I doubt very much if they came back. The camouflage would therefore likely have been Braun 8020 and Green 6003 (which was originally a Luftwaffe colour).

Interesting pics, it can be both Italy or Tunesia, as...

February 3 2007, 8:01 AM

the southern part of Italy resembles a lot the north african grounds... if we look at the photos, tough, the landscape is a hilly terrain, low hills and grass and shrubs.
That is typical of the coastal area of Tunesia and of the southern coastal areas of Sicily, but if we should date the pic in 1944, the fights at the time were in the central area of Italy (depending from which month, in the famous Cassino area or more to the north, Lazio and southern Tuscany) that is typically composed of much higher and steepy hills.
Thi being of course pure speculation, but If I should judge from landscape I would say Tunesia OR Italy, but earlier, say Sicily in late 1943...

OK, historical worth of my babbling = zero... thanks for reading, anyway..

S!

And thanks Esko for the pic!

No :)

Just remembered that some book mentioned that the pics were taken in Italy, however now that you mention it, they could well be from Tunisia as well, scenery is quite the same. I agree that if some of these were sent to Tunisia none came back.
