August 30 2007, 8:51 PM

I agree about the MG34's.....

August 30 2007, 11:14 PM

I think both ways(with/without stock) are a safe bet. I'm building Tamiya's mid Hetzer so most if not all the pics I've seen show full MG34's. Although I'd love to see one with a MG42. I like those much better.
Thanks

Logical explanation!

August 31 2007, 12:43 AM

The answer is quite simple! Without the butstock the weapon interfered less the quick openening of the hatchess and the reloading of the magazine. But in the case the vehicle had to be abandoned 'in action' an MG with butstock could be fastly taken out of its mount (it used wingnuts)and used as an extra weapon to get the crew to safety. So it merely depended on what the crew(commander) thought was the most important!
I hope this helps you out!

Panzer crews had a kit in which the buttstock was stored when not in use.

The 34 Buttstock was removable the 42 was not. !

August 31 2007, 9:31 AM

Hey Guys,

The buttstock on the Mg34 was easily removable , I believe the 42 stock was not. The coax in the turret mantlets on most German panzers had removable 34's that could be used on the cupola AA mount also. This gun could also be easily removed for fleeing purposes. There was a factory made location in these tanks for the the stock as it was left off in the mantlet.I would imagine that the Stugs and Jagd's that had the remote 34 probably had the stock located inside also for this same purpose but that is a wag by me. I believe this because I know that the panzers were so fitted so why would not the SP's. Hope this helps model on and have fun Lads.

Brian

P.S I am adding this note later , after I posted I see Marks post wich was'nt up yet when I started writing. Excellent site Mark thanks I copied that page.

The buttstock of the MG 42 was also removable. The main reason of using MG 34 insteed of MG 42 was the high rate of fire on the MG 42 and the necessary of changing the barrel of the MG 42. The MG 34 had a barrel that could resist more heat

Thank you for the help....

The information you all provided is of great help. I guess it pretty much rules out the MG42. I think I'll use the full length MG34. Thanks again
