The radios on the Zvezda 251/3 Ausf.B from the post below are what I can identify as the following:
80 WSa transmitter- top right
110 WS transmitter- right center
Ukw.E.d1 receiver- top set center below the box with handle
20 S.W.d transmitter - below Ukw.E.d1 together they make up the FU7 radio
Torn.E.b - on the lefthand shelf.

These sets can make up the following radio combinations
Ukw.E.d1 & 20 S.W.d- FU7
Torn.E.b & 80 WSa-FU12
TornE.b & 100 WS-FU11

The question is what 251/3 is it? Type I-IV? Dose anyone else have any ideas?
The Fu7 wiring schematic can be found in the book German Radio sets 1935-1945 page 174.

An answer and an example

March 17 2008, 5:32 AM

Roland,

To answer your question: through years of research and luck to find the sources you need.

In a lot of situations, an additional radioset was combined with an already available set for special purposes.
Without going too deep into detail about what kind of special purposes, let me give an example.
The Table of Organisation for the HQ & HQ Co of the Panz.Aufkl.Abt. (gp.) as of 1 April 1944 (KStN 1109 (gp.) (f.G.)) called for 2x 251/3 in the HQ.
One of those vehicles was intended for the Ordonnnanzoffizier and was to be equipped with:
"Das SdKfz 251/3 für den Ordonnanzoffizier ist ausgestattet mit 1 Satz Fernmeldegerät Fu 12 SE 80, 1 Satz Fu 7 Se 20 U und 1 Satz Funksprechgerat f".
Well, there you have it. 2 sets combined in one vehicle.
This means that besides having contact with the Spähtrupps in front of the division as well a having contact with the the division behind them with the Fu 12 (in a perfect world, the divisional recon battalion operated in front of the division they belonged to), the Ordonnanzoffizier (do not translate this as Ordnance Officer) also was connected to the Luftwaffe through his Fu 7 set.

This is only one small example.

You see, I don't build plastic kits anymore (I do not have the skills to call it a model), instead I (think I) know some things about the theoretical organization of the german army, and their radio operations.

Re: An answer and an example

March 17 2008, 8:37 AM

Thank you very much Piet for answer/example. When I´m sort of  'wired' up I take my chance with a couple of questions as you seem to be the man that have an answer.

What is Kdo.Fu. for a combination (in 251/3 V) of transmitter/receiver?

In DML's 251/6 kit you have a U100a just called power unit. GG 400 is also called power unit. I belive there´s a difference as my sources says umformer of the U100a but maschinensatz of the GG400.  Is U100a just a transformer and connercted to 12V battery and GG400 a generator not connected to 12V battery?

And which transmitter/s needed a GG400 or other maschinensatz i.e., is there a need for it in DML´s 251/6 radio config. of the Fu12, Fu11 or Fu19?

I would be grateful if you could clarify these things. TIA

Best regards/Roland

Ehm.... euh... what?

March 17 2008, 9:24 AM

Roland,

I understand your questions. Too bad I can't answer them all for you.
Unlike what Part of Poland advertise with, the 251/3-IV isn't really a IV but a V. Kdo.Fu.Tr. = Kommando Funk Trupp. The Funkkompanie in a Panzer-Nachrichten-Kompanie was authorized to have 2 Kommandofunktrupps, for the division commander. With it, he was able to listen in and respond directly if needed.

Maybe you should visit the website from the USAMHI and search their online documents for the manual of the german army. It has a chapter on german radio equipment and which set goes with what. Recommended!

Try Google

March 17 2008, 9:42 AM

Roland,

go to Google, type USAMHI and click on the first link.
Hit Research, then Research Catalogues, Military Publications, Browse, ALL digital documents by historical time period and you should be able to continue yourself.

Search and finding stuff yourself is way more satisfying than getting everything on a plate
