What was the first Waffen SS unit to be issued the SdKfz 251? I would assume the LAH, but was wondering if maybe it was Wiking. Any answer is appreciated!

The introduction of the 251 was in the beginning of 1939 in the first pz div. The pics I found of 251's in the western campaign are all from the army. I think that only in 1941, after the Balkan campaign, the waffen SS recieved their first 251's, so with the invasion of Russia LSSAH and Wiking both should have their 251's.

Early 1943 would be when the SS divisions had armoured battalions but they could well have had specialist versions of the 251 before that. Wiking didn't have an armoured battalion until January 1944. Alan
The LAH had a handfull of SdKfz 251 Ausf B (and one Ausf A if I recall correctly) attached to them via the SS-VT Artillery Regiment in the operations in the West 1940. They later stayed with the unit to become the basis of the LAH Artillery Regiment, although the 251's were eventually replaced by SdKfz 7's, and 11's. The vehicles did stay with the Regiment as command vehicles, but were probably lost in Russia by early 1942.
The first employment of LAH Panzer Grenadiers with 251's (Ausf C) was in Kharkov, 1943, as they were only equipped with them during the refit in France, summer 1942.

Question about the LAH in France
May 16 2008, 8:33 PM
Steve, Did the LAH receive their SPW's in the summer? I know that III Bn was officially redesignated in November of 1942. So they recieved some 250's and 251's in the summer then?
It seems that it was autumn or very late summer, and the majority of them were assigned in November, there may have been some earlier ones for training purposes, but not much earlier.
There was one SdKfz 251 Ausf C that I have seen in the parade through Paris on 29th July 1942, which is sometimes assigned to the Aufklaerungsabteilung in books. I believe it may be a 251 from the Beobachtungs Batterie of the Artillery Regiment.
Cheers
Steve
