Yes and no

The steel chin mantlet was available during the Ardennes Offensive on some brand new vehicles, but the last steel wheel dates from the Spring of 1945 (too late for the Bulge), and only on a handful of tanks from one factory. It's been discussed at length on Missing Lynx. Just do a search here for threads on LSW (last steel wheel) Panthers.

Rear Turret Plate
July 6 2009, 2:28 PM
Nice review as always:)
But yes, on the Befelspanther G the turret rear plate is still too far to the right. I measured the Panther G at APG down to the mm here. If you dry fit the kit rear plate you will immediately see that there's no room to add the missing weld bead. Looks like they went off of the Doyle drawings but neglected to take into account the overlap of the turret side. If you dry fit the corrected rear plate you can see the difference. It's not much but if you want to add the missing weld bead there's no room to do so.

Interesting question, and as a follow-on.....

...
Here's Peddinghaus' offering of the Schw.654 BefehlsPanther G , a photo of this machine on fire in Normandy is included in the Fedorowicz 654 book. It's also included in the colour plates at the rear of the book.
Given the timeframe of its use, I assume this tank would carry full zimmerit?

Well...
July 6 2009, 5:53 PM
...the "Zimmerit" is a mistake in proof-reading on my part as the review was based on that of the recent Zimmed Panther Ausf.G kit. I did delete the DS100 Zimmed baggage bin mention, but forgot the other one. The review will be amended in a few minutes.
The color plate caption for the Befehls-Panther Ausf.G in the Federowicz book says October 1944 at Grafenwohr, which is post-Zimmerit. I could not find the photo mentioned in that book. What page is it on?
The turret rear plate matched the Doyle drawings, which is all I have to go by since I have not made measurements of the real thing.

Cobwebs on the brain
July 8 2009, 6:21 AM
My brain, that is. Yes, you are absolutely correct, Frank, the plate in the 654 book is indeed dated October 1944, zo zimm wouldn't apply.
Do you know if the oak leaf symbol was seen on these 654 command tanks? Better still, have you seen any photos of these particular beasts which would confirm or otherwise that the camm pattern is not just artistic license?
The panther G I mistakenly referred to above as being on fire was, now that I think about it, an A model.
Opologies for the confusion,
regards,
Barry

It's OK, I too am...

...easily confused!!
I have no idea if the markings are accurate or not, as I have the same book and not much else, reference-wise, on that specific point of our discussion.
Another choice for markings comes from Echelon Fine Details, AXT-351015, Panther, (Wiking and Hermann Goring). This excellent sheet has the rearing white Minotaur on the glacis plate, and the disk cammo on the Schurzen, seen on a vehicle from HG.
