Advice needed : Stug Brigade 280 in Arnhem

To all Stug experts out there :

I understand that the main changes needed to turn the Dragon 6412 kit into that of Major Kuhme of Stug Brig 280 in Arnhem are :

1) install the folding gun support on the front hull
2) use pressed steel fender supports
3) replace the crew compartment roof with one that has side-opening hatches and the remote MG hole , but that the MG and mount is not present

Can anybody advise if any aftermarket producers offer 1) or 3) above? I think I could manage to steal 2) from an old Tamiya kit.

thanks for any help which you can give,

regards,
Barry

There's good news and ...

Hi Barry

it doesn't sounds as if you have bought Dragon (actually Cyber Hobby) 6412 yet, If not I wish you luck, as they are very thin on the ground now.

However, if you DO manage to get one, the good news is that you have been somewhat misinformed and:
The Alkett fenders and pressed steel supports are part of the kit.
The roof is the 'mid' style with bolts, side-opening hatches, no pilzen and blanked-off rundumsfeuer mount (so perfect for 280 at Arnhem).

Also:
The latest Dragon StuG IV 'Late' kit has a spare complete MG crutch for the StuG IIIG in addition to its own.

The only caveat to the photo above is that the 80mm front of this vehicle is the 'other' style than 6412's (6412 has the the fully-interlocked side pieces). But both styles were seen with 280 concurrently at Arnhem if you decide to model a different 280 StuG. It's also an easy conversion job given that any cutting can be hidden when the zimmerit goes on.

Best of luck with obtaining 6412...
Ron

If not...

Barry, failing 6412 you could always buy Dragon kit 6581 (Dec 43 production).

This later kit than 6412 has a better rendition of the 80mm hull front, the same Alkett pressed fenders but still the 'early' roof (however, weirdly you do get the correct late hatches as well).

You could update the roof with these hatches, then add bolts, hinges and a blanked-off MG post from one of the old Dragon 'late' kits (just done it myself twice) or adapt a Tamiya item.

What you'd need then would be a set of the late pressed return rollers with holes, and the late drive sprockets with no covers. Both are superbly offered by PanzerArt and are on ebay for inst. Plus the later schurzen and supports (though not all 280's StuGs had them at Arnhem).

Cheers
Ron
