Response to Compulsory Registration on Discussion Groups

I'm TRYING to create an account, but no matter what I use I keep getting an error message about "cannot use non alpha numeric characters" in the account name. I am not trying to use non-alpha numeric characters! Anyone else getting this message? Any suggestions?

I'm not opposed to the registration - several other groups I participate in have it, BUT I do object to trying to use a system that seems pretty finicky about when and where it will work (Network54). I really enjoy M-L, but if I can't log in from my home computer, then it becomes a nice tool that I can't use! I was also curious about why only two day's notice?
