... they also had the counterweight at the muzzle end, as it was needed to balance the gun for the gyrostabilizer.

P.S. So far I have only seen photos of very early M4A1 and M4A2 tanks with the short gun (plus fixed hull MG pair and bogies with top mounted return rollers).
