M4 with unusual speed number *pic*

This image comes from the Archives Normandie website and shows an M4 with a speed number on the turret side that looks like C-T-5. No information about the location or date. The guy up front looks like a US soldier so I assume this is a US tank. I seem to recall seeing a color film clip of an M4 with similar markings in the video Suicide Missions: Tank Crews.

Speed Number

November 8 2005, 10:51 AM

Dan,
Nice picture, I think the number is C15 with a line across the top, I have seen the same thing somewhere else, maybe on America's war in colour? If I can find it I'll put up a screen grab.
Regards
Paul.

I also think, that this marking is C15 with bar above it.
I think, that I know, which film clip you mean, Dan. It is one short color clip showing M4/75mm with 3 piece tranny cover passing through some French village, I saw this clip in several different TV documents. This tank has on turret yellow marking H9 with bar above it, there is also name on hull side, seems to be "Harry". Unfortunately I cannot see any bumper code, but I assume that it is 2AD or 3AD tank (large yellow letter/number code typical for these units and also only these ADs had coy lettered H in their structure). But tank on photo above should not belong to 2 or 3AD, as in these armd divns C coy was light tank coy. It makes this photo still more interesting and mysterious. I have also no clue, what does mean bar above letter/number code. I only remember that in WW2 USAAF and RAF used sometimes bar below individual letter (with their squadron/individual plane letter identification codes) and this meant, that there were two planes within one unit with same individual letter (one with letter without bar and other with letter with bar). But to me it is logical only with letters, because there is limited number of letters in alphabet. Does anybody have any answer to these questions?

Ondra

PS: Dan, look at your mail box, I am sending you two frames of H9, which I saved somewhere on the web some time ago.
