possible use of LVT on D-Day ? (or at least on Normandy beaches)

While watching a TV show called Eté 44 (summer 44) about the french liberation I was stunned to see in a short color sequence about the landings what seems to me to be an LVT-2.

Sometimes those documentaries are made of mixed and match pictures or movies so you can see US Marines langings to illustrate the Normandy campaign but this time it doesn't seem to be. (that's why I have included other pics of the same sequence)

I've never heard before that LVT had been used on D-Day or the days after because the scene looks rather "peacefull".

Daniel

Additionnal note: after a second look the barechested man on the first pic makes me think that these are again mixed pictures.

LVTs in Normandy

August 19 2006, 2:27 PM

This is a longstanding (but unsettled) controversy. There was certainly no large scale use of LVTs in D-Day if at all, and the ~300 LVT in the UK were specifically earmarked for a back-up operation by Patton's 3rd Army in Quiberon Bay in Brittany that never occured.

However, there is some photographic evidence that a few LVT-2 were used for carrying supplies to the beach, though it's not clear when- probably a few days after D-Day.

There is some discussion of this issue in the book "Spearheading D-Day". There is a rusted out LVT at the Utah beach museum.

Could have been Patton LVT's

Use them or loose them, or in other words they were availble. The footage is way after D-day at least the first three frames(very sunny)The next two let me think D-day or +1 Injured Brit is evacuaded(at least I think so) and it is very cloudy. The last two frames: all peace and quiet on the beach, nice weather, so way after D-Day. Just my 2€cent. Cheerio, Arno B.T.W. Steve hope to see you in Bunnik

possible use of LVT on D-Day

August 20 2006, 11:18 AM

Hi all,
I have searched a definitive answer on the use of LVT's on Normandy beaches. The only info was the same as found in the Histoire & Collections book where two shots can be seen. These two shots were taken out from the aforementioned film.
The interesting thing is that the two LVT2 rusting away for ages out of the Utah Beach museum are said to be the genuine amtracks used by the US troops. They were abandoned on the beach after major breakdowns and also lack of interest for using such vehicles in Normandy. This may explain their extreme bad state. One was in a so bad state that it had been defintively destroyed and put away. The remaining one is almost collapsed due to rust.
The other contribution I can bring here is a photo that I scanned from the collection of a friend of mine. This photo has never ever been published before and cleary shows a LVT1 on fox green sector, Omaha Beach.
