Were all of the CCA 2AD Shermans that repulsed the 17SS attack at Bloody Gulch all M4A1, or were M4s also present?

Bloody Gulch -- Carentan

February 1 2008, 7:20 AM

I'm referring to the attack by the 17SS on elements of the 101AB southwest of Carentan on 13 June 44, that was repulsed by CCA of 2AD. I ask because all the references my (admitedly somewhat inexpert) searches for 2AD Shermans in the period just after D-Day only find references to or pictures of M4A1s.

Bloody Gulch....

February 1 2008, 7:28 AM

Hello there,

Below is a Sherman (which type?? My Sherman knowledge is poor, to say the least). Anyway, it's from 2nd Armored (I think, sorry, don't have a clearer picture), in Carentan, sometime between 13th and 21st June.

Picture posted for discussion only etc.... source - expired e-bay auction.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Sean

M4's

February 1 2008, 8:47 AM

Hi John,
I think it likely that there would have been several M4's at "Bloody gulch". Off the top of my head I can think of several in 66th armored regiment (which formed CCA of 2nd AD). "Dodo" was the command tank of Co. D, there's "Hurricane" and "Hawkeye" of Co. H, "Intruder III" of Co. I and "Fury" of Co. F (though they both might be tanks of 67th Regt.). I have also seen several M4's passing through Carentan, which were probably Co. G, but unfortunately it was impossible to see any names clearly.
HTH.
Paul.
