The great tire debate

of many years ago about the wheels and tires on the Tamiya M8 came to mind with all the debate about the DML howitzer tires. So today I dug out some left over M8 Wheels and put the caliper to them. Low and behold the 9.00 x 20 tires scale out to 40.42 scale inches, right in the middle of the 40.1-40.7 range said to be correct for the M2A1 Howitzer. Even better they look right to the Mark 1 eyeball. One word of caution if you use the M8 wheels as I intend to, use the front wheels as they have the greese cap on the center bearing.

Hope this helps,

Tom Owens

Good idea

That sounds like a good idea, Tom, I had forgotten about the Tamiya wheels. Maybe someone made highway tires for the M8/M20 that could be used for the howitzer? The M8 and M10 ammunition trailers also used 9.00-20s. Perhaps the TMD wheels could be used? EDIT: They are lug tires as well, so no advantage over the Tamiya parts.

(*) "Debate" is really a misnomer - Nobody was really arguing about the correctness of the tires this time, just how much attention should be paid to it.

RE: Good Idea

Kurt,

The good news Tiger Model Designs M10 trailer wheels scale out to 40.6 inches and have the correct hub cap. The bad news I bought a set (#353015) for $3.50. The bad news they are not listed on the TMD sight now but if there is a demand maybe they will appear again.

Bad news for anyone with an M8 trailer, if the wheels are supposed to be 9.00 x 20 the are under size scaling out to 37.8 inches about the same size as the M2A1 wheels.

I did not have any aftermarket M8/M20 wheels to check but maybe someone else can check their stash.

Hope the info helps,

Tom O.
