Counter shading: did it work?

Just looking at the MMI #41 build of the Miniart Bantam and the author refers to counter shading deep shadows with white.

Is there any information that this counter shading was effective (ie, did it work?)?

Thanks,

Greg

No

Although commonsense might suggest it should work, reports commissioned during and after the war all concluded that it simply wasn't worth the effort.

countershading

November 8 2009, 1:24 PM

It might not have worked on land, but it was extraordinarily effective on ships and aircraft, especially over the sea. In fact, several experiments with lights shining up under the wings of aircraft like the PBY Catalina, adjusted to just kill the shadows, resulted in spotting distances being reduced from many miles, to hundreds of yards. One RN warship painted, unofficially, with a countershaded and coloured scheme was involved in a collision and the other Captain claimed he simply didn't see the other vessel! I'll look up the particulars tonight....

The land environment

is of course very different from the examples Tim notes. In particular the various and often quickly-changing backgrounds, effects of dirt, dust and mud, and of course much shorter ranges of observation all play their part.
