Question re KV-2

Have just purchased Trumpeter's 1/35 KV-2.

Have a question re the turret side weld marks...at the front.

Should it be at the junction of the side armour and front panel of the turret, or as depicted on the model only on the side of the turret, just beside the front turret panel?
Reference pics seem to show the weld was between the 2 panels but noone commented this as something which should be corrected on reviews...

Confused...

Anyone can shed any light?

Matthew

Assuming that you mean the MT-2 (production) turret

The side plates fitted between the front and rear ones and were attached using pegs in holes drilled in the front and rear plates, so there were welds visible on the sides. The holes were then plugged with weld as on the hull and KV-1 turrets. On the MT-1 turret, most joints were chamfered.

So...

The welds should be on the joint between front and side panels and not as depicted in the trumpeter kit?

Don't have the Trumpeter kit

December 3 2011, 6:33 PM

The KV-2s are about the only ones I don't have of the Trumpeter KV variants so I can't tell you how it looks. However, Neil makes no mention of the welds needing any changes in his review on 4BOgreen:

http://www.4bogreen.com/kv-series/plastic-and-resin-kits/1-35-scale/trumpeter/00312-russian-kv-2-tank

I'm therefore inclined to believe that the kit welds are fine. The site is a very useful resource for the KV series by the way, in case you were unaware of it.

KV-2 Turret Welds

December 5 2011, 6:21 AM

Hi Matthew,

Leave the weld seams where they are. They are correct for the MT-2 turret as depicted by the Trumpeter KV-2 kit (actually the kit depicts a vehicle from the second KV-2 production batch in May/June 1941). As mentioned above, the front and rear plates were attached using locating pegs inserted into holes drilled in the ends of the side plates, so the front and rear plates butted onto the sides and the welds were on the sides, inset by the thickness of the armor. There were also flanges and welds on the interior of the corners.

The MT-1 turret, as depicted by Trumpeter's KV Big Turret kit, had the weld on the apex of the corner since the plates were beveled on that turret.

This is all covered in the Turrets chapter of my KV book and somewhat implicitly in the reviews and 'recipes' on www.4bogreen.com. I say implicitly because I don't cover the things that *don't* need to be corrected on the kits.

Hope this helps,

Neil
