I never saw any photo of an Achilles I C. Can anybody help? A Google search didn`t help, and a search in this forum gave me, unfortunately, only broken links...
Any help is very appreciated!!

Do you mean M10 17pdr with early turret?

Tank Destroyer M10 (based on the M4A2 diesel)and M10A1 (M4A3 petrol)are almost impossible to tell apart in photos unless they show the engine deck. Both were supplied to the British and converted to what are now (apparently started by Chamberlain and Ellis)referred to as Achilles IC and IIC respectively. Wartime references call them various things, most often all are called M10 17pdr.
I am aware of references that call examples with early turret or hull features mkI and later models mkII, this is plain wrong.
If you mean M10 17pdr with early turret, the second photo on the IWM link is one, as (I think) is the one in the photo with Maj-Gen Barber, on the second page, which is doubly rare in also showing the applique armour. Other photos exist but a very small proportion compared to those with later "duckbill" counterweighted turrets.
Keith, I would like to see proof that Britain received any M10A1s as I don't think we did.
Wartime sources do indeed differentiate between turrets as 'vee type with counterweights' and 'duckbill type' or sometimes 'modified type' but I suspect that the postwar Achilles IC and IIC do differentiate between turret type.

possibly compounding errors

Thanks Adrian. I am only repeating a number of secondary sources in quoting supply of petrol engined M10s to the UK. The Lend Lease records I have don't specify sub type.
I am familiar with wartime documents and the various ways of differentiating between turret shapes however was not aware that the Achilles IC and IIC were official post war designations. I am keen to know more me more. How is your Achilles IIC?
