Hey there, gents! I'm looking at my Echelon decal sheet for Lees and Grants #352006, and specifically at the 3-color camo for Allysloper. The artwork shows a pale tan, medium green, medium brown, and darker green on the lower hull. This pattern is not the Alamein style as shown in Mike Starmer's booklet for that period (which I have). I'm guessing that this was a spring/summer '42 pattern. Questions:
1. Am I looking at Portland Stone or Mid Stone, Dark Olive Green, and ??? Brown?
2. Would the lower hull have been left in the original OD?
I just looked at my two pictures of this grant and all I can see are random patches of a low contrastslightly dark shade than the base colour which at this time should be Light Stone 61. However my pictures are rather bright and look overexposed. But I cannot see more than two shades.
...rather more than the decal sheet artwork. So, Light Stone 61 and something random and blotchy as a disruptor. Any opinion on what that might be? Overexposed or not, if the contrast is not all that high then perhaps a lighter green like Khaki Green #3 rather than Dark Olive Green?
Greg, I would consider use a colour like Slate 34 which is a medium toned grey green, more grey than green in fact like FS.34159, but faded somewhat. However given the fairly low contrast it may be Silver Grey 28 which is what I believe was used on some of the 5 RTR Stuarts and Grants in early 1942. You may recall those with the top surfaces in a slightly darker shade than the basic colour with dark blackberry patches sprayed on.
I hadn't thought about those two colors. Good news is that I happen to have a tin of each from White Ensign, so I'll be set once I get it all put together and can decide which one looks best. Absent a color picture, I guess that I'll have to do just that...guess. Bad news is that now I don't have a good excuse to place another paint order just now!
