Hi all.

Is there a good book about Soviet Field Artillery in WWII?

It may also be in Russian, if there are enough drawings, illustrations, photos etc.

Thanks in advance and cheers,
Peter

PS: I have the Schiffer book by Michael Foedrowitz.

Russian artillery encyclopedia

The one "must have" on Soviet artillery is A. B. Shirokorad's massive "Entsiklopediya otechestvennoy artilerii" published by Kharvest in Minsk (Belarus) in 2000 (ISBN 985-433-703-0). It is 1,155 pages long and covers Russian artillery from the early days through to the post-Soviet period. The text is better than the illustrations which are a bit on the skimpy side.

Russian Books on WWII Soviet Artillery

July 29 2012, 11:17 AM

Steve is right, A. B. Shirokorad's "Entsiklopediya otechestvennoy artilerii" is a must have book if you are interested in Russian artillery, I have a copy and I refer to it all the time.

Another slightly less massive book on Soviet WWII Artillery is

Artillery of the Soviet Union during the Second World War Author: Ivanov Publisher: Publishing House "Neva" Year: 2003 Pages: 67 ISBN: 5-7654-2731 - 6

Its a very modest book in size, but it covers all the Soviet artillery of the Second World War, including antiaircraft and railway artillery, it is illustrated with black and white drawings, one per gun type, and doesn't have any photos. It might be hard to come by unfortunately.

A very good website with Russian artillery in WWII is:

http://www.armchairgeneral.com/rkkaww2/weapons.htm

photos and drawings at:

wikipedia!

The articles on soviet artillery weapons provide background info (probably translated from the books listed by Steve & Lee) & identification photos for most. I think every field gun / howitzer has a separate page and they are all cross-hyperlinked, allowing you to follow the development tree.
Check the list at the bottom of
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/152_mm_gun_M1910/34

If you want books in English, search out the 3 appropriate volumes of Chamberlain & Gander's WW2 Fact Files, published by MacDonald & Jane's in 1975 (Light and Medium Field Artillery / Heavy Artillery / Infantry, Mountain and Airbourne Guns). Long OOP, but not hard to find 2nd hand. There are copies on ebay atm.
