Response to One more question:

All the cool hardware came directly from the Russian Ministry of Defense, which co-operated in making "9th Company." IIRC, that's even mentioned in the credits.

I'm at work now with...uh...limited research available. But the director of "9th Company" is the son of the man who directed the humongous 1955 (?) Russian production of "War and Peace."

The actor who played the drill instructor in "9th Company" also appeared in a Russian TV mini-series about the war in Chechnya. I'm still trying to find that one lying around the internetz somewhere.
