US M109A2/A3 in ODS

July 2 2009, 2:13 PM

Hello Karl-Heinz,

You probably mean the A2 and A3 models; the US Army never operated the M109A4. In my copy of "Blitzkrieg in the Gulf" by Yves Debay (Concord 4001) there are several images of US Army M109A2's during Operation Desert Storm, so yes they were used. Another M109A2 operator during ODS was Egypt.

Regards - Dirk

Oh really?

"The US Army never operated the M109A4."

That's wrong. One of my old units, 1/127FA KSARNG had M109A4s at that time. When 1ID was deploying from Ft.Riley they tried to get the State of Kansas to swap their A4s for 1ID's A3s, since the A4 had a NBC system on it. Kansas, knowing they'd never get them back, said no deal. I'm sure there were some FA units from USAEUR that had A4s. An A2 was a new built howitzer, an A3 was an A1 converted to A2 standards. An A4 could be either converted to A4 standards, one of those being the NBC system. You really can't tell an A4 from external pics.

Thanks for the input. I always asumed you guys skipped the A4 upgrade and went straight for the A5 and A6 models.

I had both an M109A4 and M109A5 at my maintenance school that we used to train 63D/45D artillery maintainers.

Here is my gallery images of both the A4 and A5.http://gallery.kitmaker.net/showgallery.php/cat/17344

And a photo of the A4
