Hi Guys,
I recently acquired a AFV Club NATO Centurion Mk 5/2- 6 and was wondering which of the AFV Club Vinyl Mantlet covers are appropriate for it . I think # AC3500009 Type B (but i'm not 100% sure . I have read Terry Ashley's reviews of both the Type A & B mantlet covers , but am still unsure .

Either is possible

If you could let us know the nationality and rough period of the Centurion you're planning on building we can help better. The AFV Club mantlet covers have some issues as discussed by Terry Ashley at PMMS. I've got replacement covers from Firestorm and whole turrets from LionMarc for my large selection of future Cent projects. You might want to consider those possibilities as well.

Ooops, you know about the PMMS reviews already. Serves me right for using Continuous Partial Attention when responding. Sorry!

Choosing Mantlet Covers
November 6 2009, 2:42 PM
On the front of each box it gives the Mark of Centurion each mantlet cover is designed for.
Type A- Mk.6/2, Mk.11, Australian Mk.5/1
Type B- Mk.3, Mk.5, Mk.5/1, Mk.6, Mk.7, Mk.7/1
Essentially what the selection comes down to is whether the mantlet has just the coax port or the coax port with the ranging gun port. This of course will depend on the Mark of the tank.
If you build the AFV Club NATO Centurion Mk.5/2 / Mk. 6 out of the box you will only use the mantlet with the single coax port....therefore use the Type B mantlet.
There are unsued parts in the kit that will allow you to modify the kit into a Mk. 5/1 or Mk. 6/2 or Mk. 11 so then you could use the Type A mantlet. The instructions just don't mention the parts as they are left over from the Ausie Mk.5/1 kit.

Mk.5/2

I think the first Mk.5/2 was produced around 1959.
Overall the kit is very good. Just be cautious with the rubber road wheels as some folks have had issues attaching them to the plastic portion of the road wheel. Other than that is should be a pretty straight forward OOB build for you.
Bill Munro in his book The Centurion Tank (how the heck can you underline titles or put them in italics on this forum?) says:
"The plan by August 1958 had changed: only the Mk.7 and Mk.8 would be upgunned. Upgunning (to 105mm) a Mk.5 required 250 man hours, but the same job on the Mk.7 and Mk.8 needed just 130 man hours."
"In the event, the Army Council Secretariat decided, in April 1959, that all Centurions in the BAOR should be upgunned...this would involve... 246 Mk.5s."
I haven't built any yet. Any trouble with paint on the rubber road wheels Jason?
