M3A3 in The Twilight Zone

January 23 2010, 12:23 PM

A 1961 episode of The Twilight Zone featured an M3A3. A National Guard unit was playing a wargame around the Little Big Horn River in Montana and the tank crew crossed a ridge only to find Custer's Last Stand.

Post-war Stuarts..........

January 23 2010, 2:32 PM

were used in Viet Nam,I know.Don't know what happened to the Brit's thinking, but I would much rather have had an M-5 sans turret for recon than a Dingo.Would have thought they would have made excellent vehicles in that type of environment;rough terrain, rice paddies, mud and snow and very few paved roads.Ah,but let's have a go with the Dingo;it'll be fun.For that matter, the US could have used them.Yes,the Stuart might have gotten them into trouble sooner, but it would have been much better at getting them out of trouble, don't you think??????Dan

postwar SE Asia M-5 users, in their little Indochina unpleasantness.
Unless you were meaning when the Brits were the substitute imperialists in Indonesia 45=46 while the Dutch were trying to get back. Indian units could've had M-5s there, I don't know.

Borrow money from pessimists -- they don't expect it back.

Ah,yes,K.........

January 24 2010, 12:14 PM

I was just speculating that the British may have benefitted from the use of Stuart recon rather than the Dingo in Korea. And,yes, the French landed at Hai Phong after WW2 and I believe that was Vietnam......Dan

Both sides in the Chinese Civil War used Stuarts. I think

January 23 2010, 5:06 PM

you will find that the British use of Dingos in places like Cyprus, Kenya and Malaya had more to do with agility than armour protection and that the insurgents had few A/T weapons.

Hello Ley..........

January 24 2010, 12:22 PM

you will find that I didn't mention Cyprus and those other places.I was referring to Korea and it was hypothetical,at that.I just thought that the Dingo was an out-of-place vehicle, given the topography of Korea and its weather.I'm sure they got by just fine with the Dingo.........Dan

Post-war Stuarts

January 23 2010, 5:43 PM

Hi Pete,
If you want to build a post-war M5A1, there are a couple of options that are interesting in my opinion.

First, a Portugese in Angola, as you mentioned. There are a couple of photos on-line of Portugese Stuarts in Angola, sehttp://algarvepress.net/fotos/3594_batalhaodundun.jpgXXX,http://www.prof2000.pt/users/secjeste/Arkidigi/Angola/Nambuangongo/02_Nambuangongo.jpgXXX anhttp://www.cmjornal.xl.pt/noticia.aspx?contentid=A5C5DE7D-7966-44BF-BEE3-06872BFD3D56&channelid=00000019-0000-0000-0000-000000000019 . (Sorry about the long links, remove XXX.)
They were used by Batalhão de Cavalaria 1927.

Second, a British turretless Stuart gun tractor at Suez in 1956. These were in sand colour and carried a rack at the rear for ammunition. They towed 17 pdr A/Tk guns. Markings were British VRN and a white H on the side.

Third, French M5A1 in Indochina. The markings are not that different from 2DB in NW Europe.

Fourth, the Nationalist Chinese (Kuomintang) used M5A1 in the later stages of the Chinese civil war in 1949.

If you include the M8 MGC, the French used these in Algeria. I'm waiting for AFV Club to release an M8 for this.

HTH,
Erik L

M5A1s in Angola

January 25 2010, 2:47 AM

Erik,
I have been looking for M5A1s used by Portugal in Angola and these are the first I have seen. Thanks a lot. I would really appreciate any more you might have. Also, have you any idea what colours make up that camouflage?
Regards
Gordon

Colours

January 31 2010, 5:59 PM

Hi Gordon,
No, unfortunately I have no idea about the colours. My guess would be olive drab with sand camouflage. If the vehicles were in their original colours, they would be US OD. If they were repainted by the Portugese, then I guess a Portugese colour would have been used. Maybe one of our Portugese friends here on M-L could elaborate?
I would use an olive drab, eg Tamiya XF62, and cover it with dust.

Those photos are the only ones I've seen too.

HTH,
Erik L

Postwar stuarts

January 25 2010, 3:11 AM

Pete,
I have collected what pictures I could find from the web of post-war tanks used by different countries. They are saved as word documents so I can send you any of them as an attachment but only one by one due to their size. There are a number of Stuarts used by different countries as others have mentioned so if you require pictures of Stuarts used by a particular country send me an e-mail and I will send you what I have.
Many South American countries used Stuarts (M3 or M5 or M3A3 or M8) post war and some took to the streets in riots or coups but the countries that used it in combat are mainly France in IndoChina (and possibly Algeria), South Vietnam, Cambodia, both the Communist and Nationalist Chinese during the civil war, India in Kashmir as well as on the streets to quell riots, Portugal in Angola, El Salvador in the civil war and in the soccer war with Honduras, the UK in India during the riots. There may be more as I certainly do not know everything.
Hope this helps.
Gordon
