Can I make a 'standard' Chally 2 from the Tamiya kit or should I get the Trumpeter kit?

I'd get the Trumpeter kit
The running gear has far better detail, the fit issues with the turret bins appear to have been sorted, and its an absolute bargain
I remember building the Tamiya kit and being a bit underwhelmed...

I second that...the Trumpy kit is a bargain and in some areas is more accurate than Tamiya.
Not sure where you are but Hobby Easy were doing them at a ridiculously low price - worth a check.

I can only second all that has been said, Tamiay make a 1/2 hearted attempt at suspension and produced it undersize, the hydraulic track adjusters are in the Trump kit but not Tamiya.
I am building with my grandson, HRH Duchess of Kent (RDG) stored in Ashchurch in its training role, i.e no extra armour and when photgraphed no rear fuel drums, so yes Go for it.
