Are you sure?

May 6 2013, 9:24 AM

Yes DML can and does put out some dogs can you say Shermans or the Jeep? On the other hand what about there Tiger 1, Panther G any of there PanzerIIIs, PanzerIVs the M7 priest, M1A1/A2 and the U.S. halftracks all class beaters. So yes they do indeed miss the marks some times and some times they redefine the mark. Any way how long has AFV been showing or talking about there M48 two years?

I'm happy to see this one appear! I'll be happy to have the AFV Club issue as well. I'm happy to see something from Dragon without the joyous SS riding on it. Let's see if Dragon does Vietnam tanks riders too, Army or Marines, either way, a good thing to see . I'm happy to see DS tracks, too.

The AM guys , I hope will do some nice things for it.

All in all, a nice surprise announcement have a real soft spot for the -48 ..

May 6 2013, 1:32 PM

You're going to have to convert your own from what ever kit ends up out there. Really doubtful that any company will do a M60 slick. The A1 thru A3 share a common lower hull, where as they'd have to change it up for a Slick. Not that hard to do just have to find yourself a turret and convert the lower hull. I used a CMD one, but they are almost impossible to find theses days. Legends makes one.

It'll be interesting to see if they include a cover for the gun mantle and an external mount for the commander's .50 cal MG.

To me this is good news though, because now that DML have announced a M48, AFV Club may speed up the development of theirs. wink.gif

The M48A3 MOD B, which the DML kit is, has a different fender support set up than a M48A3, ala the Tamiya kit. The nice thing about the DML kit is it's just a 105MM barrel away from being a M48A5.

Some thoughts on the kit.

May 6 2013, 11:21 AM

From the flyer and the built up kit, there seems to be no holes in the drive sprockets. no big deal to me as I have several of the DEF sets. The gun mantlet has no canvas cover, neither does the .50cal. I'll just adapt a Tamiya one and do what I've done in the past and make my own bellows and tie downs. Like I said above, it's just a 105MM barrel away from an early M48A5. Before any one asks, the IDF had very few M48A3 MOD Bs or M48A5s, so if you want to do an Israeli one you will have to back date the front and rear fender sections and use the earlier headlight set up. Yes you'll see IDF M48s with this style headlight set up, but those were converted from A2s. The DS tracks are a bonus, let's hope they have the right amount for good track tension and are not like the Sherman ones that are always 2 shoes too long.

do you think that Dragon may think that releasing the DS tracks separately may siphon off sales from their kit? People might buy just the tracks to dress up the older kits instead of rushing out and buying the new kit.

Too many negative waves for what should be a joyous announcement!

Interesting to note...

May 6 2013, 5:41 PM

That the U.S. representative for AFV Club did not have a release date for the M48. No exact ID, nothing. In fact, they had NO information what so ever on the kit, other than its stock number.

The turret shown at AMPS Atlanta was first revealed at the IMPS Nats in August. So it's nearly a year old.

Kinda odd that no progress has been made in all that time.

It makes me speculate that they are waiting for the dust to clear on the DML release before spending any more money on the tooling.

Emphasis on the word "speculate."

Also before you gripe, please try to remember what we've had to work with all these years. Almost nothing is correct on the Tamiya kit from the waist down. Whole portions of the suspension and hull are just plain made up. It's seventies tech is awful--it's a motorized battery operated kit!

The DML kit is going to be great and if the AFV Club appears, we'll have it even better.

Happy days are here... A real Mod B.

Gary,
Look at the picture of the tank with the shark mouth. Does something look familiar about it?? Me thinks that Ron V might have used the Ft Riley M48A3 Mod B as his "guide".

A 11th Cav M48 is now in our grasp as well as the before mentioned early M48A5.

May 7 2013, 2:58 AM

When did Dragon last release any modern figures? 8-10 years ago or so? That's another tradition to pick up again. Seem unlikely but a 'nam tank crew would be a nice addition to this release.

Very pleased with the M48 anyway.

Nice Work!

May 7 2013, 5:09 PM

Please post progress shots as you complete it.

I think there should be a support group. This has happened to me so many times:

I was working on the Tamiya M3 Halftrack; enter the Dragon M3 Halftracks.
I start on the Italeri M3 Scout Car, but wait! Here comes the Hobby Boss M3 Scout Car.
I buy everything for the Tamiya T-62 when Trumpeter decides to unveil their T-62.
I have the OLD Tamiya Matilda on my bench when Mr. Tamiya callously introduces the NEW Matilda (that one really hurt).
And now the M48.

So far my only successful update has been the Tamiya M113.

I've had the Italeri Crusader Mk I on my shelf for a while with all the resin and PE bits and bobs waiting for an upgrade and full interior but I'm honestly afraid to start it.

Oh well. Whatchyagonnado?

Don't feel bad

May 7 2013, 10:14 PM

Like others, I am in the middle of updating the old Tamiya kit using both of Legend's sets, the Academy M.G. set, the Eduard P-E set (which caused more problems), and the AFV Club track set. Plus, I've bought more than a few books as well as making a side-trip to Ft. Knox mainly to photograph the M48A3 that was returned by Vietnam.

Concerning the lack of a mantlet cover, the vast majority of photos that I have show M48A3's with mantlet covers, but I found two exceptions. One, "Claustrophobia", is clearly an early M48A3 as it lacks the vision riser. A second, an un-named tank from H troop, 11th Armored Cavalry, may or may not be a late M48A3. It has the vision riser, and the front headlight brush guard appears to be a late brush guard (but it could be a deformed early brush guard). But, the photographed is cropped so one cannot see the rear of the hull. So, one could model a M48A3 in Vietnam without the mantlet cover, but it would not be a "typical" Patton.

And yes, someone (Dragon and/or MasterBox?) please make a set of Vietnam-era tankers. The Tamiya figure set is woeful. The Academy figures in their M113 are not a whole lot better. Just make sure to include optional torsos to capture the differences between USMC and US Army flak jackets.

Wishing for plasitc and resin crew!

If DML is smart they will get Ron Volstad...and no other....to draw artwork for four or five Vietnam-era crew figures. Then DML will get a sculptor to slavishly copy that artwork and get it out at the same time as the M48!

But if they fail us...Taesung/Alpine to the rescue!

Gotta ask.....

May 7 2013, 10:08 PM

I love the M48, but I know little about the versions, so, what is so significant in the Mod B tag over an A3?

One of the last versions of the A3

May 7 2013, 10:37 PM

The B is one of the last versions of the A3, the fenders and headlights and light guards differ from the earlier M-48a3.
Owsley can inform you a letter better than I on this mod.

Do a search on here for M48A3 MOD B, there's quite a bit on it.

Re: Dragon announce M48A3

Looks great overall. However... not trying to start another epic roadwheel flame war, but the roadwheels look hinky to me for some reason. Maybe the rubber rim isn't thick enough or the outer steel rim itself isn't. Either way, i have a sizeable stash of panzer art steel wheels to compare to. I do like that they've finally figured out how to do the DS tracks without a separately glued center guide horn. Hopefully there's a VSS1 searchlight and it's done right. Also hoping for a proper track tension idler assembly. Time to chuck the Tamiya A3 I have in my stash to make room for this and the AFV Club rendition when it arrives 3-5 years from now. Maybe AFV will do a first batch version with the "old" M48A1 headlights, that would cover most if not all A3s.

Two wrongs don't make a right, but three rights do make a left.

Sorry to hear that.

You do know the Panzer Art road wheels have the wrong hub?

Of course, but they got the rim detail right and i'm willing to live with the short hubs. No one's perfect.
