Hi all. I'm aware of a book by Heitman called War in Angola: The Final South African Phase. Does anyone know of any additional info on this campaign in that time frame? Thanks

DT

Mobility Conquers

August 6 2017, 12:51 PM

Helion released "Mobility Conquers - The Story of 61 Mechanised Battalion Group 1978-2005" a couple of months ago. While it is essentially a unit history of 61 Mech, it of course covers 61 Mech's roll in Angola in detail. It is a massive tome of over 1000 pages and I'm only a few hundred pages in, but it is well done and of course written by one of the prominent SA authors Willem Steenkamp. Hundreds of original photos as well, although they are printed small.

A few more to think about

August 8 2017, 7:12 AM

The War for Africa. Fred Bridgland. Ashanti Books,1990.
Pathfinder Company.Graham Gilmore .30 degrees south books.
They Live By The Sword .32 Buffalo Batttalion . Jan Breytenbach.
Continent Ablaze . The Insurgency Wars In Africa 1960-.
South Africa's Border War 1966-1989 .Willem Steenkamp Ashanti books. 1989.
Koevoet . Jim Hooper .Southern Book Publishers 1988 . This last doesn't actually deal with Angola and is about a police unit in Namibia , but worth a read if you can find it.

Another Heitman book

August 9 2017, 5:24 PM

South African War Machine by Helmoed-Romer Heitman
Gallery Books (1986)
ISBN 0 83177929 2

It's a large format hardback and is fairly generic (covering all three services), but it does have chapters on Angola and the insurgency - well illustrated but it he did other books on Angola then they may be repetition in the photos.

Regards,
John
