you're probably right that most "late" sprockets never had the cover installed in the first place (as opposed to having lost it).
The point I tried to make in a clumsy way was that both sprockets are the same item, just with or without the cover.

I agree that the most annoying part of Revell's StuG are the return rollers.
IMHO Revell's StuG is a December '44 production vehicle, by which time rubber return rollers would be very rare.

About the StuH:
The first StuH were based on the Ausf F/8, so it was in production right from the start of the Ausf G production run.
