Sir, I do indeed make such adjustments as you say; I do go to 1:76 scale when it seems absolutely impossible that a 1/72nd representation will ever appear. In most cases the models fit together well enough,-although give each manufacturers' "scale creep", there are some which are not compatible.
And long enough have I been in this hobby of small scale armor...to remember how for many years indeed one thought little about mixing the two scales. There's no predicting the whims of model companies' future designs: some do relative market research, some have a historical interest, and others put on a blindfold & pull something from a tophat.
