Hello Paul,
yes balancing the amount of paint and inkt is difficult. On this figure there is to much inkt. Inkt is very quick but also quickly overdone. What I do at the moment is starting with a white base coat (skull white) then add a layer of clear coat, then a layer of inkt for a base shade. Only than do I start the actual painting. You can get different results with different shades of inkt and basic colours.
I find the most tricky part the trimming of the plastic on soft figures. The rest can easy be repainted in case of bad results.
