The old way was to use "Mr Muscle" oven cleaner, put the kit/item into a plastic bag and liberally spray this stuff in. WEAR A MASK!!! then fold the bag over and leave for several hours. It works very well on "humbrol" type paints but the stuff used on the Oxford diecasts may be a little tougher in which case it "nitromores" from the car spares shop.
