The gist of the idea was that complete cast hulls were cheaper and faster to build than welded ones but also required high capacity foundries. Cast front piece allowed to cut costs and manhours. Later on, when the hull was redesigned with a single piece glacis plate, the composite hull proved ballistically inferior and was abandoned. Still, it makes for a very interesting subject to build.
