Fixing UMs early version Hetzer

Attached are a couple in-progress pics of my UM Hetzer build and the steps I've taken to correct a couple of glaring problems.

In the first pic I show the revised gun housing where the height of this structure was a bit too tall. Using Evergreen and CA glue I rebuilt the forward part of the mantlet to be shorter. Though not quite as short as where it accurately should be, it's a vast improvement over the original piece which stretched to the red line I've drawn on the image.

The second pic displays a broadside view of the Hetzer showing my attempt at correcting the bend which occurs on the rearward portion of the upper hull sides. The red triangle I drew in is to show where the original UM hull bent before my revisions using, again, Evergreen sheet plastic and CA glue. Although I could have used the rear deck plate provided by UM I've created my own to be able to accurately scribe in the hatch division lines. UMs rear deck plate sports lines which rest atop the plate rather than cut in. Making my own rear deck also gave me the opportunity to replace the hinges with scratchbuilt versions since those supplied are a bit on the thick side.

I also spent some time reshaping the vision block, which in its original out of the box state is fine, but again it too could use a bit of reshaping. Next up I'll be opening up the hatches and replacing them with scratchbuilds.

Obviously the kit will build into a fine model without any of these revisions, but its fun to be able to tweak and get just that much closer to the level of detail found in larger scales. It is in the end, all about the journey.

Peter

UM Hetzer and ESCI Hetzer

October 26 2005, 11:00 PM

Hello Peter.

I have almost finished the ESCI hetzer and I have my UM Hetzer ready to go next. I'm not too worried about the front of the mantlet because I do not think it will be that noticable on the finished kit. I'm curious though about the bend in the back. Was that a difficult fix? I have also noticed that the top of the UM kit is wider than the ESCI kit. I do not know which one is correct. Also, is the UM early gun mantlet the correct shape?

Hi David

The Esci kit you're building has nice late model Hetzer roadwheels, nicer than those provided with UMs Hetzer. I'll be swaping the late model roadwheels provided with my UM Hetzer with some from a prior UM pz38 offering as they are the early version and of better quality.

Concerning the Esci vs UM Hetzer width, UM wins hands down. The Esci is just too narrow on top.

About the UM gun mantlet, yes both the early and late versions provided with the kit are of correct shape.

Finally, the bend in the back.
This was a very easy fix, due in part to the way the UM kit was made. With the rear deck plate being molded separately fixing the tapered hull sides was as simple and operation as snipping them off at the point just beyond where the crew hatches on the top of the vehicle end. Make sure you maintain an accurate verticle cut when doing this, otherwise the parts you create to replace the hull sides will be off and wont lay properly when you attach the upper to the lower hull. I then attached the scratchbuilt sides which were cut out of Evergreen using a template I'd printed off on my computer and rubber cemented to the plastic sheet. If you choose to go this route I can provide you with a pdf of the template I created. It all went quite well really.

Thanks Peter and . . .

I thought the ESCI kit looked thin but I didn't have any drawings to compare it. The reason I asked about a the fix on the back portion of the UM kit is because I was wondering if I could accomplish the same thing using a file. I'll have to look at it again. Thanks for the info on the Mantlet. I'm perplexed because the ESCI mantlet is different from both the early and late mantlets on the UM kit. I think the ESCI mantlet is supposed to be the late but it is more narrow than the UM late. I looked at many pictures of Hetzers and the ESCI mantlet actually looks accurate for a late mantlet, and the UM late mantlet looka a little wide. I guess what I need are some good line drawings. I probably start the UM Hetzer this weekend and I'll let you know if I'll need a copy of your template. Thanks again.

Hetzer versions

October 27 2005, 2:24 PM

David, I did it the hard way and converted the Fujimi into an early Hetzer. Of course some days later the UM kit came out. However I compiled some info that might be of use, there is an excellent tweaks list here on ML, see my older post for this and other references that might answer the question you posted on the Axis DG: http://www.network54.com/Forum/47210/thread/1127338448/Converting+a+late+into+an+early+Hetzer
Regards, Pat
