I just picked up the new Revell M60 A1 (kit number 3168) in the UK (it was a bit of a surprise to find it). It looks like they’ve just added a new spru with the ERA and a different barrel. My M60 A3 is however in storage so I can’t be sure. Is this enough to produce an A1? – I thought more changes were required to backdate it.
it does have a new barrel with no cover and there are less details on the turret but other then that, there are no real differences as far as i can tell. I think the kit most closely represents a late model, updated a1 which would have been fairly similar to the a3 (though I'm no m60 expert so bear with me here). It has the same tracks as came with the a3 so I dont think you can make an early version, still a nice kit though.
From what I remember from the M60A3 kit is that the late style air cleaners were molded as part of the upper hull. Because of this, the kit is stuck as either a late M60A1 RISE/Passive or M60A3TTS.
Externally, there were just a few visual differences between an M60A1 RISE/Passive and an M60A3TTS.
The A3 had the thermal shrouded barrel vs. the A1 plain gun tube
The A3 had the LRF blister on the right side of the turret vs the A1's open blister
The A3 had a larger gunner's primary sight housing
The A3 had a crosswind sensor (looks like a short thick antenna) on the rear of the turret roof.
Both vehicles had the smoke grenade launchers and boxes. An early A1 would not have had these fitted.
Just to confirm the A1 version of the kit does have
1, the tube without the thermal shroud
2, the smaller primary gunners sight
3, the RHS blister is the open type w/o the LRF
4, and doesn't have the cross wind sensor.
That said you can only build a late A1 because the filters are still top loading, the wheels are still steel type, still you could use the Esci tracks and wheels and filters to produce an early but there is still the added chin armour to remove.
can help deepening this discussion. I'm the author of said article. Lacking detail knowledge about the different versions within the M60A1 designation, I keep my comments on the overall kit quality.
From the sprue scans the 'A1 doghouse (gunner's turret top sight) and open rangefinder blister are in the kit. However, I didn't see the TC's turret rear interupter which a lot of photos (and the USMC M60A1 RISE at Ft. Knox) have.
Also missing if you want to do an earlier M60A1 are the search light and it's turret rear stowage mount and as Rob says the kit has molded on top loading aircleaners. Side loading air cleaners are available in the Italeri M48 kit or as alternate parts in the old ESCI M60 kits.
I'd like to see a scan of the other side of the reactive armor to see if all the mounts for the blocks are molded on or if most are missing as on the Tamiya 1/35th scale kit.

Hi Pete,
I was on A1's during 74-78 ( 1st Cav and 3rd Armored) and we had both top and side loaded air filters on the tanks. Either one will work. Its been a while but if there is any else I can help with let me know.
