Hi Mike

I've written the occasional article for a few different magazines and I've never signed anything, hence in those cases I believe I still own the copyright for them. It sounds like you've essentially been commissioned to write your article, especially given that the kit was also provided to you (I've always chosen my own subject and bought the kit myself). So I can see that a signature and more formalised contract / agreement was appropriate in your case.
