After 15 years research, the truth was made public, in a nutshell, the German Enigma machine was upgraded from the three rotors to four, Bletchley Park was unable to decode messages with the new set up, and the aim of the raid was to recover intelligence on the latest machine. A special Commando group was set up to "pinch" as much intelligence as possible, under cover of the raid.
Due to unfortunate circumstances, the Commando group never made the landing, despite numerous attempts.
Bad organisation, timing, and an early encounter with German ships delayed things....to frustrate the operation.
An incredible insight into what seemed a suicide mission, for no apparent reason.
The cover up story re practice for D-Day, and other political issues, covered up the main purpose.
A tragic loss of life, however, had it been successful, it could have saved many more lives.
A very telling epithet, the remaining survivors interviewed, when told of the real purpose, were at least comforted that the sacrifices, though in vain, were for a higher purpose.
All in all, a very thought provoking, well presented documentary.
