Vocabulary check: commonly misused words

In our hobby, I run across some commonly mis-used or misspelled words (and I don't mean ARMOR vs. ARMOUR)

TURRENT (turret)
Battle of the BULDGE (Bulge)
Gun BREACH (breech)
JADGPANZER (Jagdpanzer)
FRUILMODEL (Friulmodel)
ITALERY, and other permutations (Italeri or the older form, Italerei)

Are there others you run across?

It's not exclusive to our hobby but

June 6 2008, 6:10 PM

it shows up often enough in it as well as everywhere else to be included on any such list:

"Begs the question" in place of "raises the question."

Did you notice that on "24" a few seasons ago Jack Bauer started to pronounce "nucular". He had pronounced it properly in earlier seasons. What does that mean? Is it a way to show support for the current adminstration?

German phrases

June 7 2008, 5:44 AM

I always react when I see German terms spelt incorrectly, altering their meaning completely. My favourite is Liebstandarte AH instead of Leibstandarte AH.

In German, Liebstandarte would mean something like Loveregiment (Liebe=love, lieben=to love). The Loveregiment Adolf Hitler... Well, it doesn't make sense but has a weird, almost absurd Summer of love-1960's-hippie ring to it.

I have to admit that I'm a bit of a language nerd, but I guess once a teacher, always a teacher.

Wich?

June 8 2008, 7:40 PM

Which and witch are English words. Wich is not. Which refers to a choice among two or more items (German: welche). A witch is a woman who has made a pact with the devil to get magical powers (German: Hexe) or in more modern times, a member of the neo-pagan Wicca religion.

At Blast-Models.com website if you choose the german language option in the first window you get an text as following: Erlesen ein Option derzeitig stemmen "einreisen die Laden" Knopf. This means free translated into German something like: choice an option at this time lift "tear down the shops" button. At first I didnīt know what they want but then I realised it should be "select an option then press Enter in the shop" button.

No offense to Blast, I admire their products. But this sentence always make me smile
