off topic: travelling to London

I had plans to travel to London to do some research in the National Archives and IWM in May but that fell through. I am re planning my trip for some time in the fall, but would like any suggestions regarding the best time of year to go to avoid as many disruptions (such as bank holidays) and hassles as possible as well as having to spend as little money as possible. I have already received a good deal of advice from a few but would like additional input before I commit myself to an airplane ticket and lodging reservations.

Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

London

As a London resident, just about, as I am about a mile from the Essex border, there does not appear to be a 'quiet' season for tourists.

The last bank holiday of the summer is 30th August this year, that is also the start of the last week of the school holidays for most UK students.

Could I suggest coming here for the weekend 19th /20th September, as that is Euro Militaire weekend and Folkestone is only about an hou fron Central London by train, indeed not much longer by car.

There is a Texas Embassy in London, they might be able to help.

Sam

Good advice from John. However, do not expect to get to Folkestone in one hour from Central London, though if you pay extra and get on the new high speed link you might do it. I would suggest an hour and a half, or even three quarters, would be more like it on the old slow train!

Check on the Internet; the high speed train leaves from St Pancras (to the north of central London); the slow train from Charing Cross or Victoria which are to the south east of centre.

See you at Euro!

Chris (about half an hour from Folkestone by car)

A bit of general info for Kew. There is a Travelodge Hotel in Kew and they often do special offers where you can book well in advance for 9-29 pounds a room per night-up to 3 people a room. If you are on a budget it cant be beaten! Bookmark the website and register and they inform you when the offers are running.

Chris is right, I was thinking of the new 'fast' rail service, which may not be started properly by September anyway.

Hmm...EuroMilitaire...tempting...

...but, on the other hand, meeting me in person would unrevocably remove any suspicions that anyone may have had at how much of a total dork I am. Ahhh, who am I fooling? I have already left too much evidence on the DG.

Thanks for your responses so far. I will definitely look into the Travelodge Hotel, Mick.

On a related though somewhat random tangent...

Do any of you beer lovers happen to know where I can get some good Barleywine in London. Ever since Young's discontinued Old Nick (must stifle sobs...sniffle) I have had to resort to inferior brews. American style Barleywine is just not the same. And with total respect to Rikmenspoel et al., what's the big deal with IPA?

thanks,
