I Like Them
July 1 2009, 9:47 PM
I got them in the PAL DVD format whereas we use NTSC here in North America, but its not an issue if your PC plays DVDs as its read in a universal format. I also got one of the second generation DVD players when the price plunged, a Daewoo unit that plays both NTSC and PAL at the press of a button. As for the DVDs themselves, I liked seeing the techniques described in what takes many photos in Mig's Faq book, whereas the DVD shows you a superimposed step by step so you can more easily see the results of the techniques on the model. I hope the other alluded to titles in the series appear sometime in the near future. If you don't think a technique is for you, then just don't use it, but a good case is made with the results shown, as in the modulation DVD. Sure, you can read about it online or in a number of magazine articles by Adam Wilder, but in my opinion, these DVD tutorials are the way to go for the future, as you see it actually being done before you. A good finishing guide is worth adding to one's hobby arsenal as spending all that cash on a kit and accessories and then blowing the finish, marring the subject you wanted to model is something that can be avoided with the added knowledge from the masters. JUst my opinion anyhow. Regards, MK

Re: any input on MIG PRODUCTIONS FAQ 1 and FAQ 2 videos?

I have the first one and enjoyed it a lot. It gives full demonstrations of techniques that work good with his pigments. Seeing it done is a lot better than looking at stills and reading about it. These are the most realistic weathering finishes Ive ever seen in 1:35th scale. It also has some great music in the beginning while Adam dodges bullets at a construction site.
It is in PAL format so if living in the USA it may only play on the PC. I have a region free DVD player which is well worth looking into if you are in the market for a new player.
One day I will track down the 2nd DVD as Im sure it is just as educating. Modeling since the 1970s and a lot of new techniques have been developed since. The DVD is a brilliant idea and worth the purchase price.

I have both #1 (The Pigments) and #2 (Modulation Style - Airbrush Techniques) and they've been a tremendous help to me. I've never been one to be able to learn a technique by looking at photos in a book or magazine andreading captions. So seeing it done with an informative narration is very helpful. DVD #2 (Modulation)demonstrates techniques for fading, weathering, washes, chipping etc. I highly recommend them to all armor modelers.
