freezes/shuts down at first, then it's fine

My PS2 is a problem for about 10-20 minutes and then it's fine. It freezes during the game, it freezes during game setup, it freezes (with the last frame on and sound stuck), it freezes and goes black, it freezes and shuts the game off (green light goes red). Sometimes it even freezes while in the browser.

After about 5-20 restarts, it suddenly stops freezing and doesn't do it again for the rest of the time we play it. Next day, it starts over.

Any ideas?

Sounds like there is Damage to the motherboard... I have seen Damaged components not work when cold will work at a certain temprature but failed if it gets to high again

The freezing and shutting down may also be a sign the video processor is starting to go..

Most likely you WILL need a new motherboard to repair this problem and bring the PS2 back into normal working condition
