PS2 disc spindle doesn't spin

HELP!!! I think my LA6508 chip is out. I recently bought another V9 dvd drive because my old drive didn't spin any discs. When I installed my new drive it still didn't spin. So I'm guessing it's the LA chip right? I have a SCPH-50001 console. If I send in my PS2 for repair, how much will it be? Can you guys also do the Romeo mod for me? Thanks.

Unfortunatly i cannot offer my services for the romeo mod :( I don;t work for this company but since the owners of the forum arn;t around I stepped in and offered my help seeing when I arrived there was 20-30 unanswered question

you can try checking the Micro fuses there are UP TO 15 depending on the model solders straight to the mainboard of the PS2 there are 3 of them that control the Motor...

heres a question when you fire up the PS2 do you see the laser itself blink/light up at all ???

I havn't seen any V9 ps2 LA chips go I usually see the V7-V8's

there is the possibility it is gone but try the fuses first :)

The tools needed to accomplish this are the following
- Philips head screwdriver
- Mini Philips head screwdriver (Like an eyeglasses type)
- Small needle nose pliers
- Multimeter (Beep mode is not nessesary but handy)

here are the steps
(Remove the AC Power Plug)
1. Remove the screws on the bottom of the PS2 set them aside with the rubber/plastic feet/covers
2. open it up paying special care to the standby eject cable
3. On the powersupply board ( You will know it when you see either a Tube Fuse and/or the black/white power cable connected to it, check the tube fuse to see if its Smokey(White or Black) to double check and I have seen it happen use the multimeter (set the multimeter to Diode or Beep mode and touch the probes together and listen for the beep or the meter to read a 1 or 0 on its display .. if it does then the multimeter is working and is set right) to check to see if its still good
4. use the needlenose plyers to lightly pull the fan Cable off the motherboard then detach the AC Power Cable off the board
5. carefully unscrew the controller port screws
6. while paying attention to the button and controller ribbon cables pull the lower half of the PS2 off
7. carefully detach both the standby/controller ribbons off the Motherboard and set aside
8. turn the contents upside down and carefully remove the 3 small ribbon cables that belong to the ROM assembly
9. carefully pop the front of the drive off the clip and detach the laser ribbon..
10. once all drive ribbons are remove set aside (set it upside down to prevent crushing or clipping of the cables
11. remove 4 screws at each corner of the powerboard and set aside. remove the board by holding from each end and pulling the board ( you will notice the 4 riser pins that connect the powerboard to the mainboard
12. remove all 7-9 ( depending on the model) Mini Philips screws that hold the EMF Sheild to the top of the Motherboard

Once those steps are compleated you will now have the raw PS2 motherboard set out..

you will find "UP TO" 14 Fuses mounted straight to the motherboard
each fuse will be marked with a PS1, PS2 label pointing to it.. these fuses are Black surface mount fuses and cannot be checked just by looking at them

set the multimeter to Diode or Beep mode and touch the probes together and listen for the beep or the meter to read a 1 or 0 on its display .. if it does then the multimeter is working and is set right

now use the probes the check teh fuses the fuses have legs on each side opposite of eachother

I have the same problem, disc spindle doesn't spin

November 15 2005, 7:40 PM

I have the same exact model and recently purchased a replacement laser but have not yet installed it. The laser does light when a disc is inserted but nothing happens, the disc does not spin. Were you able to successfully fix your problem and if so what exactly was it? Thanks

Disc spindle not spinning, 30001-R model, v5

December 31 2005, 1:11 AM

On top of that, the odd time I hear clicking coming from the laser... I took the cover off to take a look at what was going on, and noticed that not only was my disc not spinning, but the clicking was the laser being stuck at the back... Moved the laser to the front and it just went straight to the back again and clicked some more...

I'm considering just replacing the entire DVD unit (laser and all)... is that my only option, or am I missing something?
