My friend gave me his ps2 in hopes of me being able to fix it, so I don't know what happened that it started having this problem or anything of that nature.
The problem is that the disk tray won't open.
So I took the system appart (which I think was done before cause there was no warrenty sticker)
I took appart the drive and got the tray aligned on the track, so now if I turn the system on with everything appart and only the tray screwed in, when I push eject the tray will open and close fine.
but the problem is, when I put the top cover of the drive the tray will not open.
This is what puzzles me. It trys to open but can't.
so I looked at it some more and realized the problem is that the white thing that clips in to the top of the drive cover is stuck to the spinner on the bottom (by the laser).
I assume that the magnet in the white thing is what holds the disk in place, but the problem is the magnet never lets go when the tray is empty....
if the tray has a disk in it the magnet releases and ejects the disk fine.....but why won't it release when there isn't a disk in it?
How does the drive release the disk?
1. Drive tray motor is weak and will need to be replaced
2. there is something physically jamming the eject
there is a magnet in the disk hold down plate (The white thing thats on top)
if there is ANY binding of the laser tray when in the eject process the tray will not be able to pull away
get some white lithium grease ( if it an aerosol spray kind spray some on a paper towel first.. while the tray is closed flip it upside down you will see a 3 inch white bar
take a small detail/paintbrush and brush a little grease into the tracks that connect to the laser assebly tray (Marked 1 on image1) of the and add a little to the back of the slide plate by applying a thin coat to the black part behind the white side (Marked 2 on Image1)
once thats done pull the slide to the right ( take note if theres any resistance here if pressure has to be applied then something is jammed or stuck)
once the tray is released slowly pull it out apply film of grease on the metal bar (Mark 3 on Image1) thats screwed to the underside of the tray put it all back together and try again

if it jams still then you will have to get a new drive or eject motor for it
