on the bottom of the tray theres guides ( 2 of them) look between the tray and the unit and make sure the guide pins are inserted into the guides also while you have it apart apply some lithium grease to the pins... as for the tray popping out there is a small black/grey microswitch you may of damaged/broken the arm on it or the tray has some damage and missing the pin that press's it
that is like a stop position it tells the unit when the tray is fully extended and to stop the motor it also tells the unit if the tray is open so it reverses the motor to pull the tray back in.. if that switch is damaged that also causes the unit to keep trying to close the PS2 tray and thats why you have to tug if you tug on it the drive will respond and eject back out again..

all and all it sounds like you need the switch repaired/replaced

Looks for an image of the drive to see if I can show you
This is a Version 1 Switch Location

I just cracked open my personal Version 7 PS2 and its totally different its all contained inside the motor area... you may actually need a new drive I also noticed NONE of my ps2 trays didnt; just FALL off I needed to remove the guide bar from that chassis itself to remove it
