any1 that is reading this message my ps2 is not working like i want it 2, it take too long to load, and when i push the button to insert my game it gets stuck, please respond!
Hi, I'm not sure how old you are or whether it is wise to suggest taking your PS2 apart as you may not be confident, old enough or technically adept. However I can tell you what I think the problem is.
Firstly, this is a common problem I have encountered in older versions of the PS2. You don't mention which unit it is (check the rear of the PS2 and a sticker with the SCPH version).
It normally suggests to me the following;
1) The laser pick-up may be on it's way out
2) The unit may be requiring a very good clean
3) The tray or laser assembly might be needing adjusted
The reason the tray takes a while to come out is normally because the laser is finding difficulties in picking up discs that have been inserted into the PS2. Like practically all DVDrom or CDrom drives as soon as this occurs the unit continues to try to pick up data for a little longer than it would if everything was OK.
In a quiet location, with everything else switched off you should be able to hear the laser pick-up rise and fall in soft clicking noises as it tries to find data on the disc. When it fails it gives a clicking noise you might not have noticed before. When data is successfully loading then you really only hear he sound of the spindle motor. If it starts, stops, starts, stops, start, stops in short bursts then you know you need to adject the laser (or it's on it's last legs).
With all these things it's worth having a go at cleaning the unit completely from top to bottom, blowing out all the dust (use compressed air) and regreasing cogs, cleaning out the DVDrom assembly etc).
As I was saying elsewhere, in my limited experience with PS2 units (I've repaired roughly 40 of them in the last few months as part of a shipment I got at work) I have discovered that the lasers on the PS2 put up with a fair bit of abuse and it's normally something else causing loading problems. However that's not always the case and replacing a laser costs roughly £40 in the UK. My local second-hand store sells working units for £50 so frankly no contest!
There are a plethora of guides on line to assist with cleaning or adjusting your PS2, but if you have never done it before then it's not for the faint hearted, inexperienced or technically challenged.
As with any equipment with a Class A laser in it, do NOT take the lid of the unit unless you know what you are doing!
