Is my 50001 worth repairing?

I have a 50001 (have had it over a year, maybe play 5 hours a week). About a month after I installed a hard drive (and obviously the network adapter) and also a fliptop, suddenly my system froze in the middle of playing one of my games that can't be played off the hard drive. Since then the system will play nothing, not PS2, PS1, DVD, or even Music CDs. I'm stuck at the window where it's browsing and trying to load the disc (which it never does). I send it to a local repair place, but they said it couldn't be repaired, that the motherboard was dead.

I guess I have two questions. 1) is it even worth the bother (and money) to try to repair the system? 2) the hard drive seemed very warm when I removed it - would that have been an issue (if so how can I keep it cool)?
