My PS2 (unmodded), v9 (SCPH-50001), started randomly acting up when I brought it down to college a month or so ago. It had been working fine for the almost 2 years I'd had it before then, but when I took it out of the box (having kept it with me the entire time in transit, no drops/etc.) it was telling me there was no data on most of my game discs that had worked fine last time I used them. I followed the guide at tweak3d.net to clean it, and it sort of worked...it loads most games now and there's not many problems during gameplay, but I just got new games for Christmas and it's acting up again.
To begin with, it skips, slows, and eventually freezes during all cinematic sequences (that was never fixed previously). In addition, it's refusing to load Dragon Quest VIII and the FFXII demo at all (all my games have a silver back). It will flash the PlayStation 2 logo then there's just a black screen and nothing happening. Reading on the games that do work is also extremely slow with much longer load times than there used to be.
The only thing I've found that I have been unable to try is realigning the laser lens, but I was unable to locate the white wheel described in guides on how to do so. Any help would be much appreciated as it would be a waste to blow $150 on a new ps2 with ps3 so close on the horizon...thanks in advance!
a common problem with the 50001 models, is the LA6508 chip on the mainboard goes out. It sounds like yours is progressivly on its way out. you may be able to find someone to replace it, but i can tell you the most i have seen done fail. about 8 out of 10 blow right back out. it's possible i had bad chips, but i quit doing them because it was a pain to get the chips anyways.. not to mention the soldering.
