We are a group of friends who have come together because we share the common bond of caring for someone who has Trisomy 21. We are here to share therapy tips, medical issues, laughs, accomplishments and yes, even frustrations. We embrace what Trisomy 21 has brought into our lives. We feel that it has taught us to appreciate the true meaning of life. We count our children as blessings! We will fiercely protect them and fight for their lives to be valued just as all other peoples' are. We share our pictures, our stories and our hearts here not only to provide friendship and support for each other, but also in the hopes that others will open their minds and their hearts to our unique children and, in turn, make a better world for everyone.

2 kiddos here.

February 14 2008, 11:59 AM

We have Wheatley who will be 10 this weekend and Ronnie gal who will be 5 in April. We are also expecting number 3 in early May.

Right now I am getting things rolling to get some therapy from our local school system. We have our first appt. scheduled for the initial meet up. I have been very apprehensive to start this, but I know DD could benefit from some help with speech. We'll see how it goes.

So glad to see you...

Good luck with the IEP services. I haven't had to go that route yet. I might have to with my 3 yr old who is stammering really bad. He is in private right now, but supposedly the insurance doesn't cover it. Right now, we are billing them to see if they will (you never know, they might--they always surprise me on what they do and don't cover). Caleb gets private speech too, but I haven't had an OT eval for a while.

Pop back in when you get a chance and let us know how it goes.

homeschooling the older kids (ds 9, dd 7, dd 3) and haven't yet decided if we'll continue homeschooling when Ben (who's only 16 mos) hits school age. So I'm curious how & what you're doing with your kiddos. Do you have PT, OT, ST etc through the school system?

We used...

Early Intervention until Veronica was 3. We have taken a bit of a break and are moving forward to see what she qualifies for with the school system. I know she really needs ST. The other stuff is coming along at her own pace so I don't worry to much.

The most we will get right now is a years worth. Our state only provides for homeschoolers up until the age of 6. After 6 you have enroll in a charter school or virtual academy type thing if you want to keep getting services. So, we will see how she is doing when she gets to that age.

I have really always felt that as long as she is progressing and developing that therapy wasn't needed. We didn't have any therapy for her through EI. She has always been the type of kid who does things when she is darn good and ready. She has pretty much taught herself to jump just for the pure joy of jumping. She is still working on it. She has also been galloping all because it is fun and she can.

Sorry for yammering on so long. She is just such a joy to me and is changing so much right now at almost 5.

Nice to meet another homeschooler.

Re: this board looks so lonely:( maybe we can do a roll call...

I'm here with 3 boys. Eli is 9, Kyle is 7, and Noah (T21) is 3yo.

We're using Five in a Row with the older boys.

Noah is currently is a wonderful special needs preschool which we chose so he could get consistent (and frequent) therapy. He can stay through "K" and we will do that. It has been a great place for him. We're praying about the homeschooling--while it is on my heart it is easy to feel overwhelmed.
