Cy Coombes Memorial Award

by Boroboy42

I have a suggestion for who should win this award
I have known this man for many years and he is one of the hardest workers in the game of Lacrosse.
I truly believe that Mr. Brian "DALT" Downer should be the clear choice for the Cy Coombes Memorial Award for 2007. Lets show our support for a great worker of this game. What do you all think??

I would like to second the nomination of Brian "Dalt" Downer as a candidate for the 2007 Cy Coombs Memorial Award. He has been an active member of the lacrosse community for many years as a player, coach and organizer. Lacrose is a major part of his life and I believe he should be recognized for his efforts.

Cy Coombes award

by

I have known Brian Dalt Downer for many years. His passion for the game is his life.He has done just about every thing from playing at all levels, coaching minor lacrosse and being involved on different executives .He was one of a group that got the Borough Boys started ,to training for the juniors, as well as at the same time coaching at the senior B level. I have could go on about things he has done for the game in more detail if needed.I feel he would be a great candidate for the Cy's award.

DEBEERS EMAIL ME PLS.AND JOHN GRANT

by

Debeers could you please email me (travis-mountenay@hotmail.com) just want to make sure Zach is enjoying the sweater and the games and Leo. Was wondering where you were sitting (still behind the goal??) so I can tell leo to visit.

Also in response to John Grant in your Lakers 12 Six Nations 6 post:
I was amazed at his accuracy in his switch hand shot and his back hand shot. He is a very talented player who amazes the crowd, opposing players, and most definetly the opposing goalie.

John Grant

by deBeers

That cat has the ability that very few will ever know.

He can shoot the lights out with both hands.

He can fake more ways and more deceptively than any player to ever pick up a stick.

His passes are tremendously accurate and well placed.

He can shoot to score or to extend a shotclock with unhuman precision.

He takes more abuse than nearly any other guy on the floor.

Most star players don't come back on defence but he races down the floor when he's needed.

I've seen him get up time and time again after being beaten to the floor.

Most players don't have the talent to play with him, we're lucky Peterborough has such a strong experienced offence.

I can't wait until Tracey gets here because he is one guy that actually knows when John is faking and when the ball is coming. (Evans Bros, Giles, Carey as well)

His ability to look off a pass or shot is unmatched.

I've heard it said that he can't play defence....lmao. He knows more field strips and box blocks than any guy on the floor.

I've heard it said that he doesn't come back. (see above)

I've heard it said that he hogs the ball. (check his stats)

Finally, I've heard it said that he's a showboat.... He's not a showboat, he's just waiting for the rest of the world to practice a little harder so that they can play at his level. He's been doing it since he was a kid. How he plays lacrosse three hundred days a year without losing interest is a mystery to me. But I'm glad he does it. It will be a sad day in my house when he decides it's time to hang up his stick.

Re: John Grant

by stirlingfan

Couldn't agree more, but a couple of other thoughts...

1) Maybe he should be a ball hog. As an armchair coach I'd be telling Grant to hold the ball a fair bit. Not necessarily avoid passing but let the defense spend lots of time worrying about what he's going to do with it. If I were a goalie I'd be edgy for every instant junior was carrying the ball.

2) Is it always a good idea for an offensive player to hustle back on defense? I've seen some occasions when Grant got back, but probably had time to get to the bench instead. Once again as an armchair coach I'd be quite happy if Grant and O'Toole never saw each other except over a beer. Yes he can play defense, but is that where you want him spending his effort?

I'll throw that out there for more knowledgable fans than myself to answer.

good questions

by stephen

Those are good questions. I think the value of Grant holding the ball more would depend on who he's playing with. On this Lakers squad, as was pointed out in an earlier post, you have some of the other most dangerous players in the game. There's no need for John to be holding the ball to make the goalie nervous when he can use his array of fakes and astonishing passes to share the ball with Kelusky, the Evanses, Carey, Panos, Giles etc.

As for running back on defence, no you don't want him expending too much of his energy at that end of the floor, but I'm sure if he is coming back it's because he felt it was better for him to do so at that point than to run to the bench. He has incredible instincts for the game, plus he is remarkably efficient. I would generally trust him to husband his physical resources adequately to still be able to be an offensive force at the end of games.

Coach Suspension

by

I was wondering about the couch's, Jim Milligan, suspension. I wasn't at the game but I know that he has been allegedly involved in other "unsportmanslike" conduct with other First Nations lacrosse teams. My question is, "why was he the only couching staff from both teams now under suspension? What was his involvement in this incident."

Re: Coach Suspension

by

Check the Lakers website at http://www.peterboroughlakers.ca for more details. However, the head coach for both the St. Regis team and the Lakers were suspended. Jim Milligan was down on the gamesheet as the head coach for the Lakers and that is why he received the suspension.

Re: Coach Suspension

Just to clarify, it wasn't the game against Six Nations that's in question. It was the St. Regis/Peterborough game. Hadn't heard about the other coach but i'll look into that.

Re: Coach Suspension

by deBeers

The reason Jim Milligan was suspended is simple. He is listed as the head coach on the scoresheet. Batley is listed as the GM. Jim Milligan, Darris Kilgour and Kevin Smart were all suspended indefinately pending investigation. (which is to happen this Wednesday) The two head coaches (as listed on the gamesheet) were suspended for the benches clearing and Kevin Smart was suspended for his water bottle throwing antics and his subsequent stick swinging at center floor.

Just an aside.....

Batley and staff showed some real class and professionalism in not leaving the bench. They showed some savy in their choice of names on the scoresheet. They showed some foresight in not playing Laverty and Croswell as the Six Nations game could very well count against suspension. They showed some pride in letting their guys go when they had to and not making excuses for them afterwards. Now who has the best damn coaching staff in the MSL?

Lakers 12 - Chiefs 6

by deBeers

John Grant put on a clinic and played his best game of this season putting up five goals in the win. O'Toole played great. The defence was excellent with only a few cracks that Six Nations took advantage of.

One of the Chiefs learned that defencemen should wear a cup.

Offiacial Press Release

by LakersFanClub

Here is the official press release from the Lakers management in regards to the Tuesday nights Brawl against St. Regis...

The Peterborough Lakers deeply regret the cancellation of last night's game with St. Regis with 13.9 seconds remaining in the second period while the Lakers were leading 10 - 5.

These two teams have been strong rivals for several years and, as the game score became somewhat one-sided, the checking became increasingly more aggressive and escalated into very rough play and fighting.

At present it's not clear whether last night's game will be considered as official or not; we expect the league to make a decision on this within a few days. Similarly, the league before the next game will announce any suspensions to players or team personnel.

Despite this unfortunate event, Lakers fans can look forward to the team providing exciting lacrosse and entertaining games as the season progresses. It is our objective to promote Canada's national summer sport and have a successful 2007.

The team is focused and ready to play this Thursday night and we ask for continued support from our loyal fan base.

Johnson shouldn't be reffing. He is out of position for the calls he attempts to make which often end up being retaliation. Cannot keep up with the game. He lost control of another game tonight and shouldn't be reffing at this level if he doesn't have the skills necessary to do so.

This may be old news to those of you who live in Peterborough, but where I am I can't really follow the local sports scene in detail. Can anyone shed any light on why the junior lakers traded Shawn Evans? And did the senior Lakers have any say in that? It seems that the senior team would have wanted to keep him around, given his contributions to past playoff runs.

Shawn requested a trade and was granted one. The stipulations surrounding the trade included that he remain Peterborough Senior Lakers property at the close of the Junior A season.
Unless he wants to play his senior ball elsewhere he will be in Peterborough next year at the latest.
