Different type of bedding

Recently converted to Megazorb, I was up in Surrey today and just 'happened' (thats what the OH thinks anyway) to engineer our trip to pass a feed/tack place up there (I used to use when I lived up there). I went in to see if they sold Megazorb (they dont) but whilst there I noticed a straw bedding they were selling (I always used to use straw, just never have since we've been down here in the NF) only its not like normal 'long' straw, its like chaff almost, straw just cut very short. So I bought a bag (bale?) and dumped it down on Darcy's bed tonight, it looks lovely and soft now his bed but we shall see how it holds up to his night time antics (he wee's lots and really kicks his bed around), I was just wondering if anyone else has seen or uses stuff like this for bedding - my only real concern though is that Darcy might try eating it!

I got something similar for Benji as where I've got him stabled at the mo wants manure for their garden.

Less bulky than straw to muck out and more absorbant. Smells nice too!

cls, On the off chance this stuff works out even better than megazorb (which i doubt it will because I think the poo will stick to it too much), where did you get yours from and how much was it? I paid £4.95 for a huge bag/bale of this stuff today, about the same size as a shavings bale so pretty good i thought (unless compared to actual straw, which if you can still get -? - I recall only used to cost me around £2.50/bale)...

Cor, that was a good price!

I buy mine at a feed merchant near Sandy Balls and it costs me £6.90 a bale. sad.gif

I managed to get hold of a few bales of straw at £2. But it's in very short/if not at all supply at the moment. sad.gif

I pick the droppings up with gloves so it's a lot easier I find.

Different type of bedding

Nicky, I use a similar product called Dixons Dustless. I have used it as a deep litter bedding, skipping out daily and digging out the wet stuff once a week and have found it very good using one bale per horse per week to top up. Since having rubber matting for xmas last year I now only put a thin bed down on half the floor and take all wet and poop every day which is also fine and has reduced my usage by half. Also they make scented variety to deter them eating it but as it is only straw it won't harm tham anyway though they do only tend to eat it when it's fresh. Plus the family that produces it (not far from me anyway) are lovely and helpful and James is a sweety!

Yeah, thats what I think it was called, Dixons dustless, I shall have to go retrieve the bag now to see happy.gif dont think anything down here sells it though, and you're in Norfolk so thats even farther away than Guildford!
