I was told not too, as the hooves get full of snow, nor can they eat the grass, but What does everyone else think?

Thank you

ours are all out in the snow.
Just give them some hay to eat to keep them going. They get mud compacted in their feet jut as much as snow so that shouldnt be a problem.

hope this helps a bit happy.gif

There's loads of wild ponies that live out all the time, think of the Shetland ponies up North, or our ponies on the forest, you dont think their owners have rounded up all 7000 of them and brought them in do you? Or the 100's of ponies that people own for riding that live out 24/7?

Horses that are normally stabled are fine going out in the snow, I think they enjoy it, just make sure they are wrapped up warm (if they are normally rugged) and put some hay down, and break the ice on any water tanks, they'll be fine happy.gif

There is a slight difference to the forest ponies as they are not shod so the ice does not get as compacted into their feet. Last time we had snow (poss march?) my horse was walking on two inches of ice packed into his feet, this time we have put vaseline in their feet and turned out as normal as apparently vaseline stops the ice compacting?

Mine don't have any choice as I don't have stabling.
This is them munching their feeds this morning:

I had to do some icebreaking of the water buckets and they've got hay in the field but the natives prefer to scrape the snow away to get to the grass!

If they are shod just keep an eye on their feet, one tip is to put vaseline inside their feet to stop the ice balling up. We used to ride the hunters out with sacking tied round their feet as they had to be exercised.

As long as they're either rugged or have a good winter coat and can get a bit of shelter then why not? They're designed to live out! Most of them even seem to enjoy having a play in the snow too.

Of course you can!!!!!!!

Mine are 24/7, they love it out.

It's not like we get really bad weather, its only snows once a year f we are lucky.

All mine are rugged.
