What did you use? Why and what did you think of it?
It's time to start considering a saddle for Thunder, for him to be ridden in next year is prefferable but not essential, but something that will be a bit of weight for long reigning this year.
(I did this with peanuts and all worked out really well).
Being nosey, I wondered what you had all used etc.
I'm considering a treeless or a Thorowgood T4 that can be adjusted according to his weight change in the next year... and beyond.
I've just put Mac's old english saddle on Tibby just so she can get use to havint something on her back, but i think I may get a treeless one eventually ready for when Daisy backs her next year.
Bet you can't believe you're actually thinking about putting a saddle on him - doesn't time fly????
I got the Wintec 500 Cair for Ozzie and oh boy am I glad I did. The saddle man changed the width 4 times in just over 18 months! He now needs a proper "wide" because he's broadened out so much. He's really chunked up across his shoulders and chest in the last year - he's be 6 next month - so don't for one minute think Thunder will finish growing any time soon if his half-brother is anything to go by!!!
I bought a new synthetic saddle on ebay for £60 (inc the bridle! but the bridle really was not nice), its blue and just perfect for Roo and James, who loves having a blue saddle! As Roo is still only 3.5 and not being ridden as such (the odd once round the field with James on board once every 2-3 weeks on average) I think its great for just getting him used to having the saddle on and the girth being done up, and long-reigning in, of course once he starts being ridden proper (not for a while) then i'll invest in a decent saddle that can be adjusted to fit his probably changing shape
i have a wintec vsd with cair for my mare who is being backed this year, nice saddles as there not to heavy for a youngster to accept and the gullets can be changed, but the thoroughgood saddles are good too,the t4 and t6 are really nice looking light and think you can change width, just read a new test on hi tech machine has revealed the thoroughgood is a great saddle for distributing even weight and doesnt place pressure on the horses back.
I started Sunny long-reining in driving harness, as we're intending to break him to drive as well.
His first saddle was a synthetic Aussie endurance saddle fitted to his wither tracing, and he now has a new Aussie Barcoo saddle (custom-fitted to his new wither tracing, and a much better general shape for the barrel-topped back he developed last year!) which has the best weight distribution of any of the Aussies; we have English-type saddles for whenever the Aussie isn't appropriate (bought as half-dead on eBay and restored).
I have a Wintec that was Pinkie's as a youngster and it will come in for Saffron when she's ready. I think it's on 'not quite as wide as possible' at the moment, though I do have the 'medium' it originally came with and we'll have the saddle fitter out as required. The worst thing is trying to remember what I've done with the spare gullet - I know I've seen it somewhere recently! As she's now 3, we may have a play towards the end of the year, depending

Well i long-reined Buster in a roller which works really well also the less you use for something new, the less they have to concentrate on ,.i.e longreining and saddle at one time buster didnt really pay much attention to the roller but did how ever wonder what this big object was goin on his back..I however now long rein sometimes with his saddle on now he is happy and not objecting.
I have brought a Barefoot cheyenne treeless which is fab, it just sits on him and moulds to his shape also it has loads of other advantages have a look at this website: www.horseandharmony.co.uk (im not very good on computers so not sure how to send a direct link)Our other horse Merlin is in a Wintec saddle and it fits horrible comparing the two is so obvious to see which looks and gives more comfort! Also i wanted something so i could sit round him not ontop (if that makes sense) sitting on the wintec does not feel as safe as the treeless...
Not sure when you posted this post...But have you decided already??
Comet was lon reining in a roller first with a numnah to get used to something being put round his girth with pressure and the feel of the numnah on his back. Then I got him his wintec cair system saddle with adjustable gullet system which he still uses now, just goes between the wide and extra wide gullets between summer and winter and it is so light.
Time flies though, doesn't seem long ago that he was the lil baby bless him
Neither of my ponies are youngsters but I would strongly recommend a saddle company saddle. They're leather on a synthetic tree and a saddler can adjust them by the tiniest amounts. I've found them to be really nice saddles, they'd be a bit more money than a wintec, but I used to have a wintec and these are alot nicer! Plus you wouldn't have to buy him a 'grown up saddle' then
